McGaheysville's Summer Events Wind Down as Cave Hill Farms Heads Into Fall

If you spent your Sundays at the Massanutten WaterPark this summer using the locals-only discount, the resident rate ran through August 16. That Sunday was also the final Foam Party of the season, four to six-thirty in the afternoon, the kind of event where you leave smelling like chlorine and bubble solution in equal measure. Splash the Frog's Sunday dance parties continue through September 6, but the resident-discount window has closed.

Massanutten posts its own calendar. Six minutes down Rt. 33, Cave Hill Farms Brewery has been adding another kind of local attraction.

The Farm That Wasn't Supposed to Become a Hangout

Cave Hill Farms Brewery sits on land that's been in the same family since 1759, when it came as a grant from King George of England. Between 1960 and 2008 the property ran more than 500 dairy cattle. The old loafing shed, where cows were held and fed before milking, is now the tasting room, and the barn stage where bands play used to hold farm equipment and carriages, some of which is still parked along one wall as decoration.

For years that history was the whole draw: a novelty pour with a good backstory. That's changed. According to a WHSV report, this spring, a longtime local named Chance Good built something nobody asked for and everybody now wants to talk about, a 140-foot concrete RC racetrack, carved out of what used to be gravel on the Cave Hill property. Cars top out around 35 miles an hour on a track with a jump built in. Good has been out there testing it until 10 at night, running soft openings to see how it holds up.

In the WHSV report, Chance Good said, "They can race each other, we have a green jump that we put out on the track, and just competitive fun."

The track isn't even finished evolving. Good and his team gutted an old camper trailer down to the frame and rebuilt it into a mobile 33-foot observation deck, which sits between two race lanes right now but is designed to eventually travel to other spots around the Valley for one-off events. For the moment, though, Cave Hill Farms is providing the land, which means the track that's turning heads in McGaheysville is still, for now, only in McGaheysville.

Pair that with what the farm already had going for it, a converted barn full of corn hole and air hockey, farm animals wandering the property, a dog-friendly outdoor seating area, and a regular calendar of live acoustic sets on the barn stage, and you get something closer to a town square than a brewery. Families come for the animals and stay for the music. Couples come for a flight of the Full Main IPA and end up watching a kid's RC truck clear the jump.

What Cave Hill Offers Beyond Summer

Massanutten's summer programming follows the resort's seasonal calendar. Cave Hill has live music booked into fall, and its RC track is listed as year-round, weather permitting.

The Bakery Behind Two Kitchens

The other piece of McGaheysville's food scene that doesn't show up in a quick search is how connected it actually is. Thunderbird Cafe, the all-day breakfast spot on Island Ford Road that's been written up as one of the better roadside diners around, doesn't bake its own bread. Hank's Grille & Catering, the barbecue spot on Bloomer Springs Road, runs a scratch bakery that supplies the baked goods for both restaurants. Order the burnt ends at Hank's or the biscuits at Thunderbird and you're eating from the same oven either way.

That's not a coincidence worth glossing over. In a town this size, the restaurant scene isn't three competitors, it's closer to one kitchen with two dining rooms. Add Romano's Italian Bistro for carry-out and catering, and that's essentially the sit-down food map for McGaheysville proper, three names, tightly linked, none of them chains.

What Comes After Labor Day

The pivot from summer to fall in McGaheysville isn't a slow fade, it's a calendar flip. Massanutten's Oktoberfest Kick-Off Concert lands September 20, running from 11:30 to 5:30 with live bands, food trucks, and craft beer on the mountain. The resort's bigger Fall Festival follows on October 10, built around local musicians, food trucks, and Shenandoah Valley artisans. And later this fall, the resort opens ShenandoahH2O, a new hotel with direct access to the WaterPark, the first major lodging addition tied to that amenity in years.

Massanutten's fall lineup includes event-based Saturdays. Cave Hill's fall calendar includes its regular Friday-night music and the RC track. The two calendars offer different kinds of local activities.

More Weekend Options in McGaheysville

McGaheysville has a range of options for a normal weekend, including Massanutten's named events and Cave Hill Farms' activities. Massanutten still pulls the bigger crowds for its named events, and the WaterPark discount was a genuinely good deal while it lasted. The resident discount ended August 16. Cave Hill's racetrack and the bakery supplying two restaurants are additional parts of the local scene.

If you've lived here a while, you may already know the mix of activities around McGaheysville. If you're newer to town, Cave Hill Farms is one local stop, with a farm setting, live music, and an RC track.

If any of this makes you curious about what it's actually like to own a home in this stretch of the Valley, the team at Nest Realty Harrisonburg knows McGaheysville well enough to talk through it honestly, no pressure, just straight answers.
